Topology without the waffle
Good topology is geometry arranged for the job the model needs to do. A static crate, a bending elbow and a sculpt do not need the same answer.
Start with the job
Ask what must deform, shade cleanly, hold a silhouette or stay within a sensible budget. That turns topology from a beauty contest into a production decision.
Three checks that are actually useful
- Does the silhouette hold up at the intended camera distance?
- Do curved and hard surfaces shade cleanly under useful lighting?
- Can the asset be edited, unwrapped and deformed without fighting the mesh?
What not to teach as a rule
Quads are useful, especially for subdivision and deformation, but learners still need to understand why triangles exist in real-time output. Judge the result in context rather than declaring every triangle a failure.
Compare a static prop and a bending character joint, then mark where each mesh needs extra geometry and why.
